I have a friend who boasts that he is a world class, award-winning singer with a voice that can put the best of vocalists to shame. He claims to sing alongside the likes of Micah Stampley, Israel Houghton, Donnie McClurkin and other international frontline artistes. At one time, he was to introduce my wife, Aity Dennis, to sing in a concert and he did not miss the chance to
inform the audience that he sings “just like Sister Aity”. The only problem, my friend added, is that he only sings in his dream. And if you know my friend, the joke would not be lost on you. The guy does not sing; he croaks!
My friend is an accomplished journalist and has no desire to take up sing
ing as a career or even a hobby. He often employs that joke to connect with the audience as they laugh at his self-jab. But isn’t it a sad truth that there are many who sing like Micah Stampley in the dream but do nothing to sing like him or even better in real life? As we begin a new year, I challenge you to become your dream. Don’t only dream about it, do something about it. If you don’t make it happen, nothing will happen. I completely agree that the only way to fulfil your dream is to wake up and pursue it. And the time to begin is right now!
The chief enemy of progress has a fine name – procrastination. It keeps people in the planning mode forever. And they always have seemingly legitimate reasons why they need to postpone the commencement date of their project. “There is time so you don’t need to be in a hurry”, Procrastination says. But that’s not totally true. While you need a little time to brood over your idea, you must remember that every idea has a life span. And what time do you have anyway? The only time under your control is Now so make good use of it! Get started immediately!
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. That all-important step is the step of faith. And faith is daring to step out in pursuit of your dream when you neither have all the details nor all the resources. If the vision is still foggy, step out and it will become clearer as you go. The experience of Abraham has shown us that faith is superior to vision. But the worst excuse for anyone to procrastinate is lack of resources. Nobody who ever achieved anything had all he needed to get started. Start with what you have. And don’t wait for better times. As King Solomon said, he who observes the wind will not sow!
The other reason many dreams are still in the pipeline is that the dreamers are afraid to fail. So they are waiting to be sure that they will get it right. That’s a bad strategy. The truth is that the only thing that guarantees your success is your faith. So, close your eyes, take a deep breath and take a leap. If you miss it, you can do it again. The only man we can call a failure is the man who stops trying.
However, getting started is only the beginning and, permit me to say, the easier part of the deal. If you will be “a world class, award-winning singer”, a multi-millionaire businessman or investor, a top flight professional, an international celebrity, a successful politician, or whatever your dream is, the harder part is that you must get better at what you are doing. That may require learning something new or deploying new ways of getting better result. It may mean setting more audacious goals and holding yourself to higher standards. It doesn’t matter how good you are, you can be better! The question is, “what will you do to get better?”
Unfortunately, most people are stuck at the bottom or middle of the achievement index. And that is because they are easily satisfied with their little achievement. If you want to get better, you must be dissatisfied with the status quo. Don’t sit on your laurels. Challenge yourself to go for more. Aim for the top and don’t stop until you get there!
But in all of these, dear friend, you need God. Without Him, all your best efforts may come to little or nothing. More importantly, success without God is meaningless. So, I encourage you to get to know God better this year. If you are not born again, there is no better time to give your life to Christ than now. Ask God to forgive your sins and invite Jesus to come into your heart today. That’s a great way to start a new year.
